Tootsie is a hit with the Critics!
This fresh musical makeover proves it has the power to take on Broadway
Brand new musical Tootsie proved it has what it takes to make in on the Great White Way when the pre-Broadway run opened Sept 30th in Chicago. Critics agreed that this brand new musical adaptation does the hit film justice - and then some!
The Chicago Tribune called it ""the best of this recent crop of Chicago tryouts"" which says a lot in a year that's seen a slew of high-profile (and big budget!) productions including The Cher Show, and Pretty Woman. Time Out praises the show's leading man, Santino Fontana, saying ""None of it this would work without Fontana."" He plays struggling actor Michael Dorsey who dresses as a woman in order to try get an acting gig.
Of course, much has changed since the film's 1980s debut, and the musical has taken this into account, updating the script to reference contemporary issues such as equal pay and dealing with chauvinistic directors. BroadwayWorld felt the production had cleverly allowed ""the source material to evolve for the stage and era that it is being presented"".
