Beautiful Underlying Story
Prior to seeing this show, I was not familiar with Matilda (books, movie or musical) and I loved it! The musical is incredibly catchy, yet the ballads are haunting. Staging was really cool -- used projection screens to transform into different locations and even different time periods. An incredibly complex show technically and choreographically, and the ensemble managed it flawlessly. The show is appropriate for all ages, but ironically, it may connect more for adults, on a sentimental level. Standout performers were Sean Fortunato (Miss Trunchbull), Jackson Evans (Mr Wormwood), Stephanie Gibson (Mrs Wormwood), Alex Benoit (Rudolpho), Andrew MacNaughton (Doctor/Sergei), Joshua Zingerman (Bruce) and of course Audrey Edwards (Matilda). Highly recommended!
TERRIFIC SHOW!
This version of Matilda is true to the book which means it's quirky, dark, Roald Dahl kind of humor. It's amazing to watch such young kids hold their own alongside more seasoned adult actors. Good music, engaging story, impressive choreography, beautiful sets and costumes, ample laughs...it's a good, fun show that is definitely worth the trip to Oak Brook. I especially liked Matilda and the rest of the Wormwood family, but the Trunchbull and Miss Honey were terrific, too. I saw the show with my wife and we already plan to see it again with our children.
Brilliant!
I missed it when it was here in the city, well worth the drive out to Oakbrook Terrace for it. Cast were fantastic & the set design is really well done. a delight for all ages.
Absolutely spectacular,!!!!
Just came home from this musical. We were literally in the back row of the lower level up against the back wall. But we could hear perfectly! These kids as well as whole company didn't miss a trick! They nailed it! The blend of voice was incredible, these kids danced and sang their hearts out and it showed!! timing was impeccable ! The male actor playing Miss Trench bowl was perfect! Totally worth what we paid for it!!!
Fabulous
Very creative and fun. Great introduction to theater for the next generation
Dear Disappointed
If you would like to see a polished production, don’t purchase a ticket for a preview performance. These are practice performances for the cast and the technical crew (hence the term “tech weekâ€) in which the cast first works with the live orchestra, microphones/sound/lighting/computer projection systems are set up and glitches are worked out, and the director works out the final staging (up until this point, rehearsals are held in an open room with a piano and no sets.). You will be much happier with your experience (at any theater), if you attend after the official Opening Night.
