John Cleese at The Chicago Theatre

Why see John Cleese?

Comedy Legend

Where to begin with John Cleese? A true comedy legend, Cleese practised his comedy chops on the UK's satirical show The Frost Report in the 1960s before co-founding Monty Python. Surreal, anarchic and totally original, the sketch troop enjoyed enormous success the world over, and caused a huge storm of controversy with their movie Life of Brian. Post-Python, Cleese has created numerous iconic shows and characters, from A Fish Called Wanda, for which he received an Oscar nomination, to his bumbling hotel manager Basil Fawlty.

Always an engaging live performer, John Cleese has worked with the biggest stars uin the world, and always has the funniest stories. Catch him live with a screening of Monty Python and The Holy Grail when he visits in , ,

Cleese in fine form at 77 years old!

A full house & a standing ovation greeted Cleese as he ambled on stage, took a bow & sat on the provided chair. He proceeded to ask if we wondered why a world famous megastar like him would be in Palm Desert! The answer was apparently an ex wife's alimony payments! He then used the screen behind him to show a shot of a lady drawing a thick wad of money from an ATM. How we laughed at his misfortune: he later described why folks laugh at such sorry human tragedies. Using the screen to great effect with various clips, Cleese led us on his life's incredible journey. Intimate moments from his childhood, the University days where he met likeminded future entertainment stars to the Q & A. Someone wanted to know why he hadn't talked about 'Fawlty Towers'. His answer surprised me- he wasn't sure if the American audience knew much about that series. He ended up surprised as this US audience was very much into 'Fawlty Towers' & loved the clips. Good seats- A Mezz. #229, 230. Lovely Ushers. ... Read more

I do not understand the negativity

I read many reviews blasting Mr.Cleese from previous shows. My group thought he was wonderful. The man is 84, were you expecting back handsprings across the stage. He told many stories about his life and the pythons. He did talk a lot about Graham and that would be normal, he loved his best friend. His stories were very entertaining. His jokes were very Python meaning they were good hearted jabs at people and other groups. He was not mean spirited towards people. He was doing what he has been doing for 50 years. He talked a bit about people being thin skinned and woke. That would be typical of a man his age and the way he would think. What do you expect. Him to be a progressive “unfunny” comic. He is a member of a comedy troop that relished being “naughty”, his word not mine. His daughter was not very funny. She opened the show and assisted with the Q&A. In general if you are a fan of Python and Fawlty towers. You will really enjoy this show. Thank you Mr.Cleese you are a legend. ... Read more
